TOIL & TROUBLE by Augusten Burroughs was the perfect memoir for me to read in October because, yes you guessed it, he’s a witch. Just when you thought his life couldn’t get more interesting, it does.
Now I will admit I haven’t read RUNNING WITH SCISSORS but I’ve seen the movie hundreds of times and it’s fantastic. It was so out there I didn’t even realize it was based on a memoir.
Augusten resides with his husband Christopher and their four dogs (already I like him ) in Connecticut’s countryside. Augusten learned of his gift at a very young age - that he comes from a family of witches. He goes on to explain that this is a natural ability and not something that is forced or something you would recognize on the street in passing. He is known for writing very candid memoirs, anything from his dysfunctional family to his battle with alcoholism is fair game, and this one is no different.
As I read, and true to form, I found Augusten’s witchy story fascinating and hilarious. He has a flair for the dramatic and is charming beyond anyone else I’ve ever read. He is an honest to goodness witch and if anyone can be it’s Augusten Burroughs. He’s poignant, unique, incredibly talented and enjoyable to read. If you are looking for a brilliantly written, witchy memoir, I highly recommend you check out TOIL & TROUBLE. I am definitely going to read RUNNING WITH SCISSORS next! ★★★★★
