Meet the 300+ year old "Cannon" Tree.
Brought over from Mexico, it was first planted in 1630. A species similar to the cypress tree, it is also known for how tough it's trunks are. During the Peninsular War or Spanish War of Independence back in the 1800s, Napoleon's forces used Retiro Park as their base of operations in Madrid. During the conflict, they mounted a cannon aboard the trunks of the tree from which they then fired at the city. Since then this tree has remained standing and now with a metal fence surrounding it which was first put in place back in 1991.
